Plan the day around the whole ride.
A Paris–Lucerne trip can mean a high-speed train to Basel followed by a Swiss train to Lucerne (shown as “Luzern” on station boards). Compare departures for your dates, including the change of train and the time from each hotel to the station.
-
Before the station
Pack food and water, charge the phone holding the tickets, and decide who carries each bag. Check the Paris station named on the ticket.
-
At Gare de Lyon
Check the departure board for your train, hall and platform. Keep the family and bags together while you wait. Have tickets ready before walking to the train.
-
Before arrival in Basel
Gather small bags and check the onward departure. Give yourselves time to get off without leaving something behind.
Decide the seating and luggage plan before paying.
Read the operator’s seat choices and luggage rules while booking. Check the coach, seat numbers and deck on the issued tickets. A family area or four tickets does not by itself establish the exact seating arrangement you want.
- Can each adult manage their assigned bags?
- Does the route involve stairs, a stroller or a change of platform?
- Are the children and an adult seated together?
- Can you reach tickets and snacks without unpacking a suitcase?
The TGV Lyria train layout helps you read the coach and deck choices.
Give the train change its own plan.
Check the next train and platform on arrival. Include walking, lifts and a bathroom stop when choosing how much time your family needs. The shortest advertised change may not be the one you prefer with luggage.
Know whether your onward ticket allows a later departure. If the first train is delayed, ask staff what your tickets permit before buying replacements.
Keep arrival evening simple: reach the hotel, settle in, and have a meal plan that still works if the train is late.
