Route choices

How many places
is enough?

Every overnight stop adds more than a train ride. Count packing, checkout, station travel and check-in before taking a night from somewhere else.

Count from packing to settling in.

The train ride is only one part of changing hotels. Compare the whole block of time the change takes out of the day, especially if you will do it several times.

  1. Leave the room

Pack, check drawers and chargers, settle the bill and handle any gap between checkout and departure.

  2. Make the move

Get to the station, find the train, board with bags, ride, and reach the next hotel.

  3. Settle in again

Check the rooms, unpack what you need and leave time to rest before the next outing or meal.

A two-night stay gives you one full day between arrival and the next packing morning. Decide whether that is enough for the place you want to see.

Stay in a base

Keep the room and take a day trip with a smaller bag. Include both outward and return travel when checking whether the day works.

Add an overnight stop

Gain an evening and morning in the new place, with another checkout, luggage transfer and check-in. Take those nights from somewhere else in the plan.

Neither choice wins for every family. A place that is the point of the trip may deserve its own stay. A brief look may work better from a base you already like.

Ask what each extra stop gives back.

  • What will you do there that makes another packing day worthwhile?
  • Which city loses a night, and what will you give up there?
  • Will the arrival leave room for dinner and settling in?
  • Does the final train day still work with the flight home?

A final airport stay has a different job from another sightseeing stop: it can put the last intercity ride on the day before the flight.
